This month’s theme got us three thinking about our own awakenings, and how these moments involve conflicting emotions. Like in Laurence Anyways, when Laurence, a transgender teacher, presents as a woman for the first time and walks down the school corridor, half unsure, half confident, trying to contain her excitement. Or like in Thelma & Louise, when they are surrounded by police, with no way of escape. Thelma says, “Let’s not get caught…let’s keep going.” There is this sense of freedom and infinity that rushes in when they clasp each other’s palm and Louise accelerates the car, leaping into the Grand Canyon.

There’s probably so many moments, both small and big, when you’ve felt these emotions and leapt forward, braving something new. Like when you moved to a new town or school and had to make new friends, or something went wrong and you had no idea how to fix it but somehow you did it, and discovered this new side to yourself.

Find a time in your life when you experienced something like this, and write a note to your former self when you had your moment of awakening. The note can be like a letter or postcard, a journal entry, a visual representation, or whatever suits you best.

Send your note along with your first name, last initial, age, and location to [email protected] with the subject line “Creative Prompt” by Monday, November 14 at 6 PM EST.

Last week we asked you to wake up and make art, here’s what you created early in the morning…
