​​World Press Freedom Day, a day to advocate for global freedom of expression and free speech, was yesterday. Here are a few cases of journalists who have been persecuted, sometimes violently, due to strict press laws in their home countries.

Afeni Shakur passed away this past week. Although she gave birth to one of hip hop’s most influential rappers, Tupac Shakur, she will also be remembered in her own right as a life-long activist and a black revolutionary who fought for the advancement of her people. ♦
