A thaumatrope is an old-timey toy. Here’s how it works: There’s a disk with an image on each side, and when you spin the disk, the images combine like so to make a tiny optical illusion. Cool, right? You can build your own thaumatrope in, like, 10 minutes. Here’s how.
Cut a circle out of cardboard.
Use the cardboard to trace the same shape on a piece of paper. Cut it out, then make a drawing.
Use the cardboard to trace a second piece of paper. Cut it out, then make another drawing.
Glue the first drawing to one side of the cardboard, and the other drawing on the opposite side. Poke holes through either side of the cardboard, then loop a rubber band through each hole.
Here’s what the other side will look like when you’re finished. Now spin! ♦
