Savana’s pom-pom keychain

Guaranteed to raise a smile.

Guaranteed to raise a smile.

This pom-pom DIY is not only uber-cute, but also versatile! These instructions are for a keychain, but they can easily be adapted, with some ingenuity on your part, to make pom-pom earrings, a pom-pom garland, or a pom-pom gift topper.

What you’ll need:

  • Yarn, in the color(s) of your choice. I opted to use rainbow and white.
  • A fork. The size of the fork determines the size of your pom-pom. I used a large serving fork to create a large pom-pom.
  • Scissors
  • A necklace chain
  • Two jump rings
  • A large lobster clasp or keyring
  • A clothespin or a large binder clip (not pictured)

Step One

Unravel some yarn, then wrap it around the fork, perpendicular to the prongs. Don’t let the yarn slip off the end of the fork, and be sure to leave an empty space at the notch near the top of the prongs (circled in the picture above!).

Step Two

Wrap the fork with yarn 50 times. If you opt to use two colors, wrap each color around the fork 25 times. Snip the yarn once you’re finished wrapping.

Step Three

Clamp the yarn onto the fork with a clothespin, and set it aside.

Step Four

2

Cut a piece of necklace chain to your desired length (mine was about three and a half inches), put a jump ring on each end, and secure the lobster clasp or keyring to one end.

Step Five

Cut a length of yarn (mine was a little under one foot), and thread it through the jump ring (the one without the lobster clasp). Tie a knot to secure the jump ring to the yarn.

Step Six

Thread the piece of yarn into the notch in the top of the fork (circled in the picture!), then tie a knot as tightly as you can around your soon-to-be pom-pom!

Step Seven

Slide the whole lump of yarn off the fork, then tie a second knot; again, pull as tightly as you can. This will keep your pom-pom from falling apart later.

Step Eight

Snip the loops of yarn, but be careful: Don’t snip the piece that holds it all together! Keep cutting until the lump of yarn looks like a pom-pom.

Step Nine

Your pom-pom will most likely be a little messy, so trim up the pieces to shape it into a ball. Ta-da! Your pom-pom keychain is ready to be gifted.
