Cute sneaks.

Cute sneaks.

I’m a tad bit obsessed with anything having to do with ribbons. Just a couple weeks ago, I fell in love with a pair of lacy shoelaces that were originally priced at eight dollars. That’s pretty ridiculous! Luckily, I figured out a way to make ones just like them out of a spool of ribbon, but for less than half that price! Of course, I want to share how to do it with you, too!

When you make your own version of these babies, you’ll probably end up using only a small chunk of the ribbon in the spool, so I am also going to show you two other ways I accessorize with ribbons. The best part: There’s no sewing required.

Easy peasy.

What you’ll need:

  • Any type of ribbon—it can be lace, sheer, or opaque, like the one I used! Each spool I got was between $1 and $3.
  • A pair of scissors
  • Clear tape (for the first DIY)
  • A shoe that has laces (for the first DIY)

Adorable, right? Let’s get started!

Step One

Ribbon length vs. shoelace length.

Ribbon length vs. shoelace length.

Take out one of the original laces from your shoes and measure the ribbon you have against the lace’s length. Cut the same amount of ribbon from the spool and repeat once more. You will have two equally measured ribbon pieces. (Tip: Make the ribbon a bit longer than the size of the original laces. This will help you if you mess up making the aglet—to all of those unfamiliar with the term/have never watched Phineas and Ferb: It’s the tip of the shoelaces!)

Step Two

A-G-L-E-T.

A-G-L-E-T.

Time to make the aglet! Lay out a piece of clear tape. Take one end of the ribbon and place it on the edge of the tape. You are going to want to put it a little above halfway up the tape’s height. Firmly press the ribbon onto the tape. (A complete side note: I’ve had the A-G-L-E-T song stuck in my head ever since I’ve started this DIY.)

Step Three

Fold, fold, fold.

Fold, fold, fold.

Fold the ribbon in half. After the first fold, fold in half again, and repeat. I folded it down four times. If your ribbon is thicker, feel free to fold as much as you’d like!

Step Four

Cut 'em off.

Cut ’em off.

Cut off the extra tape, then repeat Steps Two to Four with the other ribbon piece to complete your pair of shoelaces.

Step Five

Put on your super-cool, super-cheap shoelaces, and, bam! You’ve got the coolest shoes on the block.
