  Well, I don’t think that’s exactly what Ananda was trying to say. As she said, it’s a sensitive (and complex) issue; women are not the only victims and men are not the only perpetrators.
  
  The idea that a victim of rape was ‘asking for it’ is, of course, COMPLETE bull crap. I think that’s just what Ananda was complaining about- and how since the most common rape scenario involves a female victim & a male perpetrator, a lot of people respond by telling women to cover up; instead of trying to understand why so many men rape. This is both ridiculous and inefficient! I agree, our society could use a change in perspective.
  
  The root of the problem is rapists, not victims. Most rational people will agree to this. However, this does not translate directly into “men are the problem, not women”. It’s easy to make that generalisation, but usually generalisations make it harder to understand the whole picture.
  
  Sorry if this comes off as a rant- this is a very complicated issue, and trying to simplify it does nobody any good!

I feel for you Ananda.
There is literally no such thing as asking for it; the core feature of rape is that it is forced and unwanted. So when someone tells you that you are “asking for it” not only are they perpetuating a culture of sexual violence and commodification towards women’s bodies, they are being completely illogical while doing it.

Ugh, Ananda, I was just thinking about it all day today! I mean, I think about it all the time, more or less, but today I wore quite a short dress and no bra (u couldn’t see I wasn’t wearing one unless u tried reeeally hard bc of the way the dress is, but that was the first time I left home without a bra) and I stayed in the downtown ’til quite late, when it was already dark. And I was so self-conscious all day, especially in the evening, when I was walking alone and there were so many groups of guys around (I moved to Paris and everyone’s constantly talking about how dangerous it can be sometimes at night and it’s still sort of a city that’s not yet entirely mine) and those rape-related thoughts crossed my mind so many times.
Anyway, about that friend – I won’t say you shouldn’t be friends anymore, but please try to educate her about that matter, it’ll be better for both of you.
