Welcome to the third issue of Rookie! Our theme is Girl Gang. We will be talking about girl bands, actual girl gangs, and all the nuances of friendship that for some reason are so specific to girls, especially of the teenaged age. Togetherness! Rivalry! Bracelets!

Below is the sloppy inspiration board I made for this month, and here is the polished version that will actually show you a little bit of what you’ll be seeing later.

Basically, Powerpuff Girls and Jawbreaker colors, girl groups of the ’50s and ’60s, cat-eye makeup, and general badassery.

The Rookie girl gang (plus Joe) isn’t a bad crew to be a part of. When Rookie was but a tiny sperm in the uterus of my mind (sorry), the New York staff plus myself all had a “meeting” which quickly devolved/evolved into sitting around eating pizza and talking about how much we love Joan Rivers for four hours. Some of our rituals include Anaheed and me texting each other poop Emojis, Anaheed asking over chat that I send her a virtual pizza while I insist on a toilet because I don’t feel like getting up, and Anaheed bugging me to finish this editor’s letter while I ask why I still don’t have that toilet I asked for. Aren’t we a quirky, zany, wacky, loving bunch?

It’s not too late to send in your own girl gang photo to [email protected], either. Here’s mine, from when we saw the Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow performance in the summer. I’m the one who looks like Anaheed still has not gotten her that toilet.

And so on and so forth. I’m so happy you’re still here! This shall be a good month.

Alrighty, let’s do this.

On Wednesdays, we wear pink.

Love,
Tavi
