Homestead

We would not mind the repetition
Just us against the world
Everything we would have had, we had made for ourselves
Clothes stitched by hand with care
Soup from the vegetables we picked
Whose seeds we tended
Just us against the world

Winter would be the best time of year
Because the harvesting would be done
And the fire blazes
As friends gather ‘round it
Sharing stories
Not unlike our own
Lives
Connected across the fields
But it would still mostly be
Just us against the world

Of course, we could go into town
Ride a horse-drawn wagon and find out the news
But we wouldn’t have to
If we didn’t want to
We could stay on our homestead forever
Tending the crops
Making a life
The best part would be knowing that everything we’d have
Is our own
We would not mind the repetition
Just us against the world
