So Much Closer

I’ve heard this sound before
Perhaps rising off the walls of a hallway
Hazy in the breaking light of day
With foggy windows and yellow hues of renewal.

Your perturbed voice kept me up all night
But the sunspots on my face remind me
That I have seen daylight too many times
To be swallowed whole by half alive streetlights.

I will rise along with the sun on a day
That feels less familiar than a childhood song
And the acceptance of defeat with a graciousness
That only the morning can understand.
