Ananda

This is the way it is, huh,
She has to choose between me
And you.
Because the two
could never possibly
Meet.
Because I’m a girl and so is she,
So our love could never
Quite be
Enough.

Days with her
Are a beacon of light
But she has to
Abandon her family
And their tradition
Of boxing night.

She wants to be an aunt
And a girlfriend
In the same breath,
But she thinks
My anxiety will make
Me feel
Like death.

Maybe it will
I can’t say for sure
That it won’t
But I’ll try my hardest
To make sure that I don’t
Offend or insult.

When I meet the people
She calls family
I will finally see
How she came to be
The way she is.
And maybe I’ll understand
how such light
Came from such a harsh
and unclenching bite. ♦
