Funny and awkward black girls found a role model in Issa Rae thanks to her web series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. This weekend, Issa was back at it with the awkwardness in her new HBO show, Insecure.

Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat writes about Hurricane Matthew and its devastating effects on Haiti, which suffered a loss of nearly 900 people in the hurricane. She brings her own testimonial—as someone who has experienced hurricanes in her native island and in the U.S.—and asks us to reckon with the horror of what natural disaster can be for the world’s most vulnerable populations. —Fanta Sylla
