I almost always find myself using photography as a form of escape. I use photo sets or collages to obscure my actual surroundings and create something that I feel is bigger and better than what’s in front of me. This isn’t a bad thing, by any means, but I’ve realized lately that it’s important to look at and appreciate what’s around me—even if it is the same suburbia I’ve lived in for (almost) my entire life and thus become almost desensitized to. I took these self-portraits to commemorate the end of my time living at home and my transition into college, and to document the neighborhood I’ve lived in for the past 13 years.
