On the Winnebago Workshop’s trip from Minneapolis to New York City, I chose to photograph almost exclusively early in the morning and at dusk. Wandering alone through Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and New York, I realized I was drawn to those transition periods, where the world hangs delicately between sleeping and waking.

I love the lighting… It reminds my of walking to the bus early in the morning. Essentially there is no one around since the plaza has been in bad business for years. The street in front of it is pretty empty too. For me it is familiar, not haunting or scary.
