The Summer We Spent Walking on Water

Do you remember a little while back, we had clear heads,
buoyant hearts, and spent the summer walking on water?
There was an end to the treading.
No more ache in our feet at the end of the day
from kicking only to stay breathing.
We didn’t fight it anymore.
We did not gain control.
We accepted.
The water kissed our feet and our skin cells
sung the national anthem.
Freedom was not fighting back, it was flowing.
Ever since the summer we spent walking on water,
sinking hasn’t been an option.
