About a year ago, I stole a super rad varsity jacket from my little brother who outgrew it. I’ve worn the jacket a bunch, but given my excessive, “customize everything” tendencies, I knew that I’d wear it even more frequently if I jazzed it up with some rainbow felt, the title of one of my favorite albums, and an embroidered name tag!
If you aren’t lucky enough to have a little brother who outgrows his clothes, or if your varsity jacket is only for sports games, you can pick up a snazzy one for pretty cheap from stores like Forever 21, H&M, or ASOS (check out this SILKY ONE!). If retail isn’t your jam (hi!), Etsy has some great ones, too. For under $25, you could try this baby yellow one, this blue number, or this kelly green jacket. It’s also always worth a try to take a look in your local thrift or charity shop and see what you can find!
That being said, I’ve detailed three ways to customize your rad new varsity jacket. You can mix and match these techniques or do them all, it’s up to you.
What you’ll need to complete the entire project:
- A varsity jacket (not pictured)
- Felt in as many colors as you choose!
- A contrasting-colored fabric or another felt. (I used a metallic gold fabric.)
- Tacky Glue or another type of fabric adhesive
- Sewing thread
- An embroidery hoop
- Embroidery floss
- Sharp scissors
- Printer paper (not pictured)
- A pencil or a pen
- Sewing machine (optional, not pictured)
- Fabric pins (optional)
Let’s get started!
