I (Stephanie) have a fondness for stories about red shoes. I love The Wizard of Oz and Dorothy’s search for ruby slippers that will take her home. I also love the spoken-word style of Loretta Lynn’s song, “Little Red Shoes,” which is a story about her childhood and her mother stealing a pair of shoes for her. (I have not, however, seen Red Shoe Diaries, which is described as an “erotic drama,” though it does star David Duchovny, who I did have a crush on, so maybe I should?)

Today, we’re asking you to create your own story about red shoes. Maybe they are ruby stilettos. Maybe they’re a beat-up pair of red Chucks. Maybe the story you have to tell is a fictional one, or one from your life, like Loretta Lynn’s. Maybe it is about magical red shoes that are going to grant wishes or transform someone’s life. Maybe it’s a romance. Maybe it’s a mystery and the shoe is—dun, dun, DUN!—red because it is covered in blood. Or maybe the shoes don’t play a huge role in the story—they’re just a character’s favorite thing to wear.

Tell or show us what these shoes look like, what they mean, and what they might do or cause to happen. Send your red shoe stories—along with your first name, last initial, age, and location—to [email protected] with the subject line “Creative Prompt” by Monday, May 16 at 6 PM EST.

Your last Creative Prompt was to try out a classic plot twist and get characters stuck together in an elevator. Here’s what happened between floors…
