Damn this is exactly what I often do: imagine a highly idealized version of my future life in order to avoid facing the uncertainty of life. I recently had a revelation that in doing this I am letting life pass me by. The only way to really create the life you want for yourself is to go out of your comfort zone & experience new things!

Wow!! This article could not have come at a better time. I am awaiting to hear back about my applications for school and right now I have made this idealized plan about what happens when I get accepted. The schools I have applied to all are in bigger cities so I am imagining all of the cool subversive people I will meet, the shows I will get to see and the new groups I can join Though it is great to be excited for the future I don’t want to be living in it anymore at the expense of not living in the present. Starting now I have to make an extra effort to find stuff in this city and to live in the moment. Thank you Corrinne for your wise and insightful words! ❤

I loved this a whole lot, and this was really something I needed to hear with all the confusing feels that go with graduating in a year.
I think the usage of the word “crazy” might have been a lil much though, and may alienate people struggling with psychosis, as it was used in a romanticized tone. Especially since this site’s audience is for us teens, as we are often told that the mental disorders we struggle with aren’t real by parents and family, and with misrepresentation of what ‘crazy’ really means, those who have psychosis are put down as the utilization of the word creates a lack of understanding in society.
This isn’t me trying to like attack ya or anything, we are all learning! Working to remove ableist slurs from our vocabulary is an easy way to make the world a better place :)

100% agree on the use of ‘crazy’. It’s ableist, and you explained why perfectly.
(We still love you, Corrinne)

I think I build a second, idealized reality, because the real one is too terrible. It hurts so much to live in the real world…But I must let the second go..

Drifting away to amazing, colourful, imaginary places filled with amazing, colourful, imaginary people is definitely something I struggled with growing up in a place where ~nothing~ ever happens.
It was my way of coping with stress, depression and abusive people, but it wasn’t healthy in any way. Thankfully, I’m out of those situations, and I still drift off into my own curated (mental) spaces, but rather than tailor my life according to what I wish it was, I just write everything down as really rad first drafts :)
