Feeling a grand sense of nostalgia and a need for more glitz-n-glam in my life (a typical Monday), I scavenged the internet for some ’90s hair accessories. I didn’t feel too hot about the ones I saw, so I decided to create my own! These DIY hair clips require only a quick trip to the craft store and a few simple steps to make and customize.
What you’ll need:
- Scissors
- A hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
- Any type of hair accessory. I’ll be using snap clips, alligator clips, and bobby pins.
- Pretty things to put on your clips! I chose marabou feather garland, googly eyes, and glitter stars, but you can try buttons, plastic jewels, charms…ANYTHING!
How to do it:
Feather Clips
For the first hair clip, I paired a snazzy snap clip with fuzzy, pink marabou.
Step One
With scissors, cut about an inch of marabou from the garland.
Step Two
Heat up a hot glue gun, then glue the piece of marabou to the snap clip. Press the marabou while you wait about 10 to 15 seconds for the glue to dry. Once the marabou sets, you’ve got yourself a custom hair clip!
If you have time to make another clip just like it, secure one on the left and one on the right side of your head. (←This look is super cute when your hair is in a pony, too!)
Googly Eye Clips
Now that you’ve got the steps for making the first hair clip down, this next clip will be suuuuper easy to make.
Step One
Take the hot glue gun and evenly stick three googly eyes onto the frame of an alligator clip (this type of clip is perfect for keeping bangs out of your face, btw).
Step Two
After the glue dries, you have successfully completed your second DIY clip! Here’s looking at you, kid.
Star Clips
Grab a bobby pin and some sparkly stars—it’s time to put all your clip-making skills to the test.
Step One
With a hot glue gun, carefully glue stars on the flat side of a bobby pin.
Step Two
Once the glue dries…wooo, you’re done! I love The Virgin Suicides, school-dance feel of this clip: very glamorous and glimmering but still so delicate and dreamy.
Keep a few of these clips in your bag or locker, ’cause you never know when you’ll want a bit of razzle dazzle. ♦
