Lilly, I loved reading about your homeschooling/unschooling past! I’ve been homeschooled my whole life, and am a ”junior” in high school now. I’ve always wanted to read something from a homeschooler on here, and you really helped!

  I really liked reading that too, I was homeschooled through 7th grade, and honestly I was so happy that I was. I think if I ever have kids someday, I will homeschool them. I had the chances to go to museums and historical sites all over my state, as well as spend time with my family. Looking back, I’m really glad I had that.

I am so sorry that this has happened to you. I have survived (am surviving?) a major grief. My best piece of advice is to find some other people who have had big, horrible things happen to them too. People who are years into their grief. Their situation does not have to match yours (in fact sometimes it’s better if it is different). Talk to them. It really helps to talk with people who understand.

Britney, my mom’s been sick for years. Everytime a holiday rolls around, I wonder if it’s going to be the last one I get to spend with her. She’s been staying at a friend’s house for the past couple of months, so they can take care of her. She came home for Thanksgiving weekend. I fell apart in tears at the dinner table because of how awful it is living in fear of death and how holidays do nothing but amplify that. It’s rough to deal with that, but it’s reassuring to hear that I’m not the only one.

Britney,

On December 16th it will be one year since my dad passed away. I got a lot of “I know what you’re going through, my parent passed away too..” and I’m not going to do that to you right now because everyone’s experience with death (and grief) is so vastly different from the people around them that it’s impossible to melt it down into one single, all-encompassing understanding.

If I could tell you anything, it would be this: Don’t compare your grief experience to anyone else’s. I think one of the most dangerous things are those “self-help books” that claim to “reveal the 5 stages of grief!!!” because there is no such thing as a *correct* or *appropriate* grieving process. Once you begin to think that there is, you subconsciously match up your own experience with what is supposedly *correct* and chances are, you are feeling emotions exclusive to YOU – and that’s perfectly okay and normal.

I just wanted to share what a friend told me this year: That the dark moments will make the happy ones much brighter. I think that yes, you will carry your sadness with you, but it won’t take away from any happiness or love or beautiful times in your life. I hope this helps in some small way.. it did for me. xoxo

Britney, i am so sorry for your lost. I myself have never lost someone I loved and I can’t tell you that I understand, but I’ve seen people who has and I’ve seen them be happy again. Stay strong.
