Sunday Video: Mnyama

A mini-film by a reader.

This impromptu project was made in Kenya on a train ride from Mombasa to Nairobi last July. A derailment stalled the train for 12 hours, leaving a lot of time to kill for the restless passengers (including me).

Mnyama (the Swahili word for “animal”) follows a girl’s escape from the confines of her train compartment to the savannah outside:

Mimi Pfahler is a San Francisco high schooler who has been reconciling her love for punk rock and hip-hop since 1997.

Mimi, thank you! This was so simple, but so beautiful :) I’m stuck in the throes of a particularly arctic Midwest winter right now, and this reminded me that the world is a huge, gorgeous place full of life and adventure. Loved the intimacy of the film, and loved the short story it told. Rookie, you saved me from another boring, icy day, and I adore you for it!! <3
