Goodness me, these are all so lush! I’d be terrified to travel to a new country on my own, but you look like you had a blast.

    • Cynthia January 15th, 2014 12:55 AM

For the most part, my boyfriend was with me and my family is in Beirut so it was not so scary!

  • babybatt January 14th, 2014 5:57 PM

<3 <3 <3 these are so amazing! I wish I didn't overuse all my compliment words because I feel like they don't mean as much as the photos deserve!!!!

I just love it! All of it!

  • mel_klucz January 14th, 2014 7:30 PM

I especially loved this, My family is from Lebanon!
It used to be the only Christian part of syria, and because of this, the french took it over and evolved it into it’s own country. Many people in Lebanon speak Arabic and French, as well as some English. If you are looking for a party, check out some of the Beirut night clubs!

  • sophiethewitch January 14th, 2014 9:46 PM

    • Cynthia January 15th, 2014 12:52 AM

I love Indonesia! I’ve been here three times and barely feel I have scraped the surface of it’s beauty. But, at least my taste buds are finally used to really spicy sambal now :-D

  • Cynthia January 15th, 2014 12:58 AM

Thanks everyone, glad you enjoyed them!! <3

  • Janis January 15th, 2014 6:32 AM

  • Isabellla January 15th, 2014 8:02 AM

Number 9 and number 50 are absolutely amazing and so whimsical. Particularly number 9 took my breath away…there is something nostalgic and dream like in the dusk-ey lighting, you can almost imagine being there. I truly stopped and was like ‘….holy actual shit.’

  • hanny January 15th, 2014 9:17 AM

Oh my these are amaazing! ✿✿ Lovee the old records they look very lovely.
Have you tried visiting some of the beaches?
I’m an Indonesian myself and I haven’t even been to Yogyakarta:(

    • Cynthia January 16th, 2014 10:58 AM

I’ve been to heavenly Bali and I dream to visit Raja Ampat one day! Yogyakarta is definitely definitely worth a visit…bought so much stuff from Via Malioboro!

  • thebuzzingbee January 15th, 2014 10:52 AM

    Such an amazing collection, Cynthia!

  • Sarah January 16th, 2014 7:12 AM

i live in bali, in indonesia…. well its sort of a LOT more consumer driven and touristy here than where these pictures are taken (im guessing yogyakarta and jakarta and just central java?) but im so glad to have come across them, makes me wanna go explore the country!

by the way, where did you get those vintage 70s records omg way cool!

    • Cynthia January 16th, 2014 11:04 AM

Yes, around Yogyakarta and Jakarta, and the records are from Blok M in Jakarta!

  • paashaas21 January 16th, 2014 12:43 PM

this is amazing, it’s so inspiring!

  • AYAtheOUSH January 16th, 2014 2:04 PM

which of these were taken in beirut? im lebanese and have lived here all my life but i still dont recognize anything except for the sea…

  • Dinda Mei January 17th, 2014 1:18 AM

Is this post’s title taken from A World Alone by Lorde? Anyway those pictures are wonderful! I live in Indonesia and i visit jakarta occasionally but i didn’t know about the record store in blok m! anyway if you go to Indonesia again, you should totally visit Bandung! It’s about 2-3 hours drive from Jakarta. visit it and you’ll know why dutch people call it “Parijs van Java” :)

  • amescs January 17th, 2014 3:13 AM

ahh so beautiful Cynthia! i love how each different time of day looks on film, like dusk and early morning

  • julalondon January 17th, 2014 10:23 AM

This is one of the most perfect things I’ve ever seen! I also have a journal full of everything and I love seeing other people’s. So inspiring!! Thank you for sharing your experiences with us!=)

  • diniada13 January 22nd, 2014 3:36 AM

There is something very powerful about these pictures, I love that you capture the beauty and emotions perfectly in every shot. The vintage records are very cute, too. Indonesia featured in Rookie makes me really happy, and I’m glad you’ve had a great time!

(On another note, hello fellow Indonesian Rookies, I’ve never realized there are many of you. I propose a meetup.)

    • Dinda Mei January 29th, 2014 3:56 AM

yesssss indonesian rookies should make a meetup event!!! ^^

  • FebieK January 28th, 2014 1:30 AM

This is such a beautiful and unique take on Indonesia. You actually managed to make me look at my own country through a whole new perspective. I love it! Kudos!

Byyyyy the way, where exactly did you get those old magazine clippings? (picture #14, #16, etc.) I’ve been wanting to get them for my project.

    Love xxxx

  • archer February 15th, 2014 2:48 PM

I love the juxtaposition of sketches between photos between vintage covers. So lovely. I am in constant wanderlust and this is perfect!

  • yas March 26th, 2014 5:10 PM

I just moved from Beirut to Toronto this summer and some of these pictures are giving me the most bittersweet nostalgia! Honestly so amazing. And from what I notice you’ve managed to capture the essence of Beirut so well ah! I love them all!
