Ok, I know 97% of my contributions mention 1: being Canadian and 2: working at a children’s bookstore, but as a Canadian who works at a children’s bookstore THIS IS EVERYTHING TO ME.

    • Anna F. December 17th, 2013 3:05 PM

but also as a human with feelings this is everything to me.

As a fellow Canadian children’s bookseller (and die-hard Rookie reader) I fully appreciate all of your contributions, Anna F.! And yes, this piece is EVERYTHING.

This is beautiful….and I can totally relate. I think that however deep and pledged friendships are when you’re younger, it’s only natural and healthy to change and grow apart, but doing so doesn’t
make the friendship any less special. In fact, it makes it more special as it’s preserved in the vintage-filtered nostalgia of the past. I am no longer in any way close to my former best friend for life, and although it’s sad looking at my innoncence and naivety in believing we’d be close forever, it’s also a lovely period of my life which I wouldn’t trade for anything.

Aaaah, Anne of Green Gables is literally the best thing ever!
A very important reminder – AoGG has sequels where Anne is moving from one coast of Prince Edward Island to another, working as a teacher, raising her children etc. I wonder why those sequels are so unpopular, they are pretty amazing and very emotional, especially the last books where most of her children are teenagers and World War I is starting…

Sharing this feels a bit like a secret because the books were an important part of my tweenhood that no one else knew about or understood except one middle school classmate whom I persuaded to read the books, she fell in love with them too by the way, of course she did~

Rilla of ingleside is everything too!

(also, I was thinking about this the other day because anne of green gables has pretty much been my favourite series for the last ten years and I’m totally okay with this and it’s just so brilliant)

  • elliecp December 17th, 2013 5:31 PM

that is so beautiful. what an amazing way to look at things – you could have been so bitter, but instead you hang on to the memories that you have with that friend. I admire you so much for this.

  • jcmay96 December 17th, 2013 10:59 PM

For someone who never really has a true best friend, this is very sweet. :’)

  • Zoe December 18th, 2013 5:58 AM

This is really beautiful. At the moment, I have this intense fear that my best friend (my only really close friend) who I’ve known since I was 6 and I are drifting apart. Rather than the usual growing apart type thing, I think it’s because I’ve developed an eating disorder and depression and she can’t stand to be around me because I just make her sad, and she prefers her happy shiny friends (and really, who could blame the poor girl?). I wish there was a magic oath that’d keep us together.

    • Monika December 18th, 2013 9:24 AM

Hey Zoe darlin, maybe talk to your friend about how you feel about your relationship? Schedule something special and fun to do together to keep you close? As for the stuff you’re going through, make sure you find an adult to help you. Friends are good support, but you need to make sure you’re being taken care of, and that’s an adult job. Much love <3 Monika

This is magical <3 I love the way you describe what was with you and what it all meant. It's memories like this which fit perfectly with 'forever'.

  • piisaa December 18th, 2013 11:15 AM

This is so beautiful in aaaaalll of the ways!

  • Cutesycreator aka Monica December 18th, 2013 1:21 PM

This is beautiful. My eyes are getting a little misty.

  • Dervs December 18th, 2013 5:51 PM

This was so sweet! I feel like the ending was so sad though. I wish real life was like a book and you could just ring her up and remind her of this and grow together once more. And maybe you can! Maybe not though.

Just out of curiosity, do you still have either of the letters you read out/do you remember what they contained? I bet they would be adorable if you read them :)

I have been friends with my best friend since we were about 5, we’re now 16 and I feel like we’ve done well to stay together for this long, however lately im worried that we might not be able to stay friends after school when we move away for college. Is there anything I can do now to help us remain friends when we don’t live in the same town or is that something which I’ll just have to wait for and figure out?
