I love the family I grew up with, but there’s something special about the family you choose for yourself—the people you feel closest to, the ones you know will always love and support you and vice versa. In that sense the people in these portraits, my friends, are my true family.
Above: Fitch has been my best friend since high school. He lives in Paris now. I will always love him. (So will my dog, Vinicio.)
Cheryl is one of my new friends in Mexico City, where I’ve lived since May. The first day I met her we went downtown together and spent many hours just having GIRL TALK, which I was starved for (I didn’t have many girl friends yet in my new city). She’s really smart and supportive and I’m so grateful for her friendship.
Kenia is one of my best friends, which makes me a lucky girl. I took this picture while we were at a friend’s house because she was looking so pretty.
Ramon was my first friend in Mexico City. He’s really a kid at heart.
Leo is another new friend. He’s so pure and honest, just a beautiful human. He’s like a tamagotchi—he’s always sleeping or eating, and when he’s tired or hungry, LOOK OUT. I know we’ll be friends for a very long time.
Gabriel and I met three years ago and became best friends instantly. I know he’ll always be there for me, and I’m always there for him. I took this picture of him and his dog, Dolores, at my birthday party. He’s going to kill me because I know he won’t like how he looks here! But I think Dolores looks amazing.
Carmiña and Alonso are always together, so I call them Carmonso. They are very in love, and I love them both so much.
Abel recently moved to another city. I miss him a lot. I took this photo at El Nevado de Toluca, a volcano near Mexico City.
Fera is living in London right now. There are no words for how much I need her, miss her, and love her. I can’t wait to see her in PERSON again.
Jaime is my roommate and one of the most amazing humans I know. This is him in his natural state, on his computer.
Allz is living in Berlin. I miss him BIG TIME, but I know he’s having fun. When I’m with him I feel like we’re in some Pedro Almodóvar movie. (He’s Penelope Cruz, of course.)
Manolin is another one who moved away recently. I used to see him every week. It’s weird not to have him here with me anymore. He recently came back to Mexico City for a music festival, which is when I took this picture.
Citlalli came to visit with Manolin. This is her and Nico, my friend Zaid’s dog, at my house. I love her, I miss her.
Zaid is my everything. I think our dogs, Nico and Vinicio, are each other’s found family too. ♦
