omg yay I went to see it this year it’s fantastic!

  • Janelle August 21st, 2013 3:58 PM

One of the things I love most about Rookie photo sets are that they can be both National Geographic and Vogue in nature. Two of my favorite worlds simultaneously paralleled in a breathtaking aesthetic composition.

Behind the scenes of a circus seems so be something you never see, but it looks so magical!
For some reason I’m really drawn to the horse with the braid in #23. Great photographs!

  • sungiant August 21st, 2013 4:48 PM

oh my god it is my dream to be in a circus like this!!!!!

  • Ladymia69 August 21st, 2013 5:13 PM

That was truly, deeply interesting. And the photography caught everyone perfectly. i am thinking of making drawings based on a few of the photos.

  • EmilyJn August 21st, 2013 5:18 PM

I just checked on the off chance because I live in SW England and yes, Giffords circus will be in my town this very week!

  • thatchocoholic August 21st, 2013 5:55 PM

Totally surreal/gorgeous pictures. I didn’t know this world existed!
    …just wow. <3

  • Yayo August 21st, 2013 6:24 PM

These are so lovely! I love the black and white ones especially. ‘ve always been slightly fascinated with the kind of family dynamics of circus performers.

We were in Truro last summer and I really wanted to go and see Giffords, but my mum has a thing against absolutely ALL CIRCUSES because she thinks they all still keep elephants in spiked chains or something (she was particularly traumatised by a circus in France as a child… hippos in paddling pools, that sort of thing).

  • sukisukisuki August 21st, 2013 6:49 PM

this is such a great photo set it reminds me of Peter Lavery’s work

  • TessAnnesley August 21st, 2013 7:52 PM

Aaah a photo album by my favourite photographer of one of my favourite things (old timey circuses ftw), best birthday present ever! :D

  • Sophie ❤ August 21st, 2013 10:56 PM

I live this set of pictures- it is so beautiful! I live the man’s crocs in #6.

  • Jasmine August 22nd, 2013 12:37 AM

Hey Eleanor, I was wondering what camera you took these lovely photos with? c: It looks like film and, being a film enthusiast myself, I can’t help but wonder what sort of equipment you use. x

    • Eleanor August 22nd, 2013 3:29 PM

For these I shot on a canon eos 300 (film camera) with the Ef 50mm f/1.4 lens. I try to shoot on 400 ISO film mostly. But i use different cameras depending on the shoot. Hope that helps!

  • kittyweasel August 22nd, 2013 3:02 AM

Great photos, however seeing animals at circuses always makes me despondent :(

  • Ree August 22nd, 2013 3:53 AM

    These are so beautiful :-)

  • Angeline . August 22nd, 2013 4:57 AM

I have to say this is one of my favourite photo sets that I’ve seen so far on Rookie <3

  • trassel August 22nd, 2013 5:18 AM

I am fascinated by circuses… I would like to make a story around a circus, but I feel like maybe it’s too cliché? But maybe I just like clichés? Maybe just want to gluttonize in circus aestethics and runaway lovers… And maybe that is okay? Probably I will do it someday.

  • cisserz August 22nd, 2013 5:21 AM

This pics are brilliant! What camera was used?

  • dorkdynamite August 22nd, 2013 7:16 AM

  • cloudinthesky August 22nd, 2013 8:15 AM

oh that looks wonderful! it seems as if the clown would look sad all the time… and I love the photo of the horse and wow this inspires me so much!!!

  • Saana V August 22nd, 2013 9:20 AM

OH WOW you don’t know how much i’ve been talking about how there aren’t circuses like this anymore and what a shame and so on so i’m really happy that there is a circus like this, and it makes me so happy that i don’t really care how i can never visit it. Lovely pictures!

  • dessertstealer August 22nd, 2013 11:00 AM

  • Violet August 22nd, 2013 1:06 PM

Omg this is so, so beautiful !!!

  • tilda August 22nd, 2013 1:16 PM

I loved these photos! My family agree that we think they’re rather better than the ones in the programme. Went to see Giffords a few days ago at Minchinhampton too, fantastic show ^_^

  • MaggieMae August 22nd, 2013 9:40 PM

Stunning photography! One of my very favorite shoots from Rookie so far

  • Lemons August 24th, 2013 5:33 AM

This is so ethereal. I love it! Circus performers make such fascinating subjects…it takes me back to being twelve years old and completely in love with a trapeze artist from a visiting circus. I went to see that show three times(consequently spending all my pocket money) just to see him and eat toffee popcorn.

    p.s – I can’t even choose a favourite. 4, 5 12 & 13 are just magical.

  • julalondon August 25th, 2013 8:35 AM

I’m obsessed with the Circus in general! LOVE THIS!

  • neenbean August 27th, 2013 11:36 AM

Wonderful!! I wish I could see such a magical circus.

  • Claire August 27th, 2013 2:32 PM

I honestly just had an epiphany looking at this that I want to join the circus

  • ShockHorror August 29th, 2013 10:12 AM

I went to see this circus!

When i was very small and saw them for the first time they had a giant skeleton puppet dancing and it scared me so much I hopped out the back of the tent till the interval :L

    This show was spectacular!
The fawn up the tightrope was one of my favourite bits, and the goose and the bicycle ;D
Ohhh all of it was fantastic.

Mum is trying to convince me to become Tweedy (the clown) ‘s apprentice – I’d jump at the chance.

  • Nisma August 31st, 2013 12:34 PM

    this is so beautiful.

  • barbroxursox September 1st, 2013 10:17 PM

Wow, this is amazing! I’m not gonna lie, I’ve always had a hidden desire of running away with a circus. <3

  • speakthroughvision September 10th, 2013 5:26 PM

Definitely getting some Halloween costume ideas from this!
    6, 8 and 13 are faves :)
