Friday Playlist: Sister Act

Your perfect bandmate may be living RIGHT UNDER YOUR NOSE.

If you want to start a band, you might not realize that you have a perfect bandmate LIVING IN YOUR HOUSE. What’s better than making music with your sister? I’m guessing nothing. But a close second might be listening to sisters make music together—whether it’s nature or nurture, their harmonizing sounds more glorious, and their playing more effortless, than most other bands’.

Here are 16 songs by some of my favorite sister acts (but you should also check out Dog Party, the Secret Sisters, the Chapin Sisters, Puro Instinct, LCMDF, Les Nubians, MayaVanya, the Nields, the Boswell Sisters, the Pointer Sisters, the Dixie Cups, the Shangri-Las, Lennon and Maisy Stella, the Angels, ESG, and so many more that I didn’t have room for!).

Why is The Dixie Cups listed twice? Are they extra good?

    • Anaheed July 21st, 2013 9:33 PM

Well either that or a dumb editing mistake on my part.

  • Clairebearscare July 19th, 2013 11:18 PM

    No Haim??
    Awesome playlist, though! (:

  • Unicorn Heels July 19th, 2013 11:18 PM

Is the Watson Twins Just Like Heaven by chance a Cure cover?? I don’t have time to listen to it yet, but I’m really excited if it is one because I love that song.

  • raisinbrancy July 19th, 2013 11:19 PM

surprised that you don’t have haim anywhere here! They’re my number one sister band with the best hair. This is the best playlist anywho!!!

  • AngstyTheBrave July 19th, 2013 11:25 PM

  • taste test July 20th, 2013 1:19 AM

this whole playlist is full of excellent things! and smoosh is on here!!! I’m kind of crazy about them! I have been ever since I found them when I was 10 from american girl magazine. I thought it was the coolest thing that they were almost my age and making awesome music and touring. and knowing they actually wrote the songs meant a lot to me. it used to irritate me how many songs marketed to girls my age were about the parties I never got invited to and the boys I was too young to give a crap about.

they’re still making music now! they’ve changed their name to chaos chaos and they sound very different but they’re as awesome as ever.

Love this! My sisters and I have an official Weezer cover band haha. My older sister plays guitar, my twin plays bass, and I drum. We are always a hit in family gatherings.

  • elliecp July 20th, 2013 3:39 AM

This is too rad for words. I want a sister now <3

  • Sophie ❤ July 20th, 2013 5:58 AM

The DuPrees family is really cool too! Eisley & Merriment make some nice music together (though brothers and a cousin are involved). :P

    • enchantedviolin July 20th, 2013 3:09 PM

Yes, Eisley is wonderful! I can listen to them for hours.

May I also add The Vespers to the list of cool sister bands? They are Americana and are AMAZING! You can totally imagine them appearing on the soundtrack for an Oscar winning film set in the Bible Belt.

    • maxrey July 22nd, 2013 5:38 AM

Yes! I was going to mention Eisley as well, though I wasn’t sure if Weston and Garren counted them out. ;)

Hoping the new generation of Dupree babies will form their own band in the future!

  • Sister Moon July 20th, 2013 10:09 AM

I love this playlist! The three bands I was hoping for when I read this were first aid kit, the roches, and heart! I always try to get my twin sister to harmonize with me but she’s not as into playing music as I am haha

  • Maryse89 July 20th, 2013 11:35 AM

aha my sis and I always joke about that cliché that sisters make the most beautiful harmony together because whenever we try to sing together it sounds like the worst noise you’ve ever heard even though individually we don’t sound that bad…

…there’s one particularly horrible video of us trying to duet ‘a little fall of rain’ from Les Miserables that both of us possess as mutually assured destruction blackmail material

  • stelliform July 20th, 2013 11:48 AM

I looove Hot Knife by Fiona Apple, I had no idea her sister was in it!!

  • thefondest July 20th, 2013 2:25 PM

School of Seven Bells’ first two albums and their band On!Air!Library! are great examples.

  • catheryne July 21st, 2013 12:56 AM

Not to awkwardly self promote, but I’m totes going to self promote my sister’s and my band Verdigrls.

My older sister and I make electronic music together and honestly it’s so hard to work with someone you love as much as your sister because it’s actual work and not just fun and games and it has the potential to ruin a bond. It’s tough but the music we make together is truly harmonious. We hope to be like cocorosie some day.

  • wonderwanda July 21st, 2013 1:21 AM
