Friday Playlist: Cover Me

Remakes that go beyond imitation.

The best cover songs tell you something you didn’t know. They surprise you, and make you see the original song in a new way. In some cases, like Fiona’s version of “Across the Universe,” they make it impossible to listen to the original ever again.

Here’s that one (#5) and a bunch of our other favorite covers.

Great list. I recently heard The Civil Wars doing “Billie Jean” which is up there with Yael Naim’s “Toxic” on the awesome scale. I also love Siouxie and the Banshees’ version of “Dear Prudence”

  • PolarisTheNorth July 26th, 2013 11:39 PM

The only thing missing is the Death Cab cover of Earth Angel

    • michelley-elley-elley July 27th, 2013 3:01 PM

I was actually going to say I wanted to see the Death Cab cover of This Charming Man but would have been nice to see Earth Angel as well :P

  • coalesce July 26th, 2013 11:43 PM

this is great! another stellar cover: “too little too late” by daniel rossen of grizzly bear.

  • TessAnnesley July 27th, 2013 12:04 AM

omg one direction is on there, i just spat my drink everywhere (in a nice way)

  • Jasmine July 27th, 2013 12:54 AM

I’m so glad you guys put Grizzly Bear’s cover of He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss) on here! It’s such a heartbreaking, powerful song and they convey the emotions perfectly into a beautifully haunting cover. xxxx

  • ebcstar July 27th, 2013 1:07 AM

Great playlist but you should’ve done “She’s beyond good and evil” by St. Vincent (covering the pop group) or ‘These days” by Nico (covering Jackson Brown

  • Sunniva July 27th, 2013 5:06 AM

Great playlist, but you should definitely check out Nouvelle Vague – they do some amazing covers, they also did “Teenage Kicks” in a french delicate way.

  • emlyb July 27th, 2013 5:21 AM

  • Ree July 27th, 2013 6:28 AM

  • Anya N. July 27th, 2013 9:05 AM

    SARA BAREILLES!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is awesome. if i were to add anything it would be Taylor Swift’s cover of Drops of Jupiter.

  • mad_dash26 July 27th, 2013 10:03 AM

St. Vincent’s cover of Dig a Pony by The Beatles is ridiculously good.

  • tez July 27th, 2013 12:11 PM

lovely list, ceremony is my favorite cover ever.

dum dum girls’ cover of there is a light that never goes out is also pretty good

  • ellestolemyname July 27th, 2013 12:32 PM

some of these covers are SO good (others, not so good but *meh* i’m not naming names)

p.s. if you play me ANY song by Sugababes I can probably sing along with the whole thing :D

  • progesterona July 27th, 2013 12:35 PM

i personally don’t like guns n’ roses but sheryl crow did such a great cover of sweet child o’ mine. all though it was an awesome playlist

  • sparklybella July 27th, 2013 12:38 PM

I think you guys should’ve put Marina and the Diamonds’ cover of Starstrukk, by 3OH!3. Her version is downtempo, deep sentimental instrumental goodness from beginning to end. It expresses the song’s lyrics so well. :)

  • melovestolaugh July 27th, 2013 1:38 PM

Iris by Sleeping With Sirens is amazing!!!! (The original by Goo Goo Dolls)

  • elliecp July 27th, 2013 1:53 PM

This is so cool! I love finding covers that I like more than the original

  • sloththefifth July 27th, 2013 3:14 PM

Going to add my two favorite covers to this already incredibly good list:

Ed Sheeran’s cover of Nina Simone’s “Be My Husband” is the coolest use of loop pedals

and Walk The Moon’s cover of the Talking Head’s “Burning Down The House” is so solid I can’t help but dance whenever I hear it

  • Jacklyn July 27th, 2013 6:08 PM

YES! I looooove that Tokyo Police Club cover and pretty much anything they’ve ever done. Like ever.

  • China July 27th, 2013 6:59 PM

Great list, i cant stop listening! but i would put son of a gun by nirvana (excelente cover of the original the vaselines)

  • jkate July 27th, 2013 7:56 PM

    Great idea! Might also add-
Cat Power- “New York,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Salty Dog,” or “Sea of Love”
She & Him “I Can Hear Music”
    Aretha’s “Eleanor Rigby”
    The Byrd’s “Mr. Tambourine Man”
The Cardigans “The Boys are Back in Town”
    Corinne Bailey Rae “Little Wing”
Beatles “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me”

  • Beezy3 July 28th, 2013 12:58 AM

I would’ve put Ryan Adams’ cover of Wonderwall on here. Love love love it.

  • Nadifa July 28th, 2013 3:03 AM

A couple of reccomendation from me:
    1. She & Him – You’ve Really Got A Hold On Me
    2. Russian Red – A Day In The Life (this is so beautiful btw!)

  • alternaivt July 28th, 2013 5:00 PM

Cocorosie’s cover of Kevin Lyttle’s “turn me on” is a favourite!!! It’s so tragic and withdrawing and beautiful – an ironic opposite to its original.

I’ve listened to this cover so many times that the lyrics have stuck with me: When the occasional event of the Kevin Lyttle version being played occurs, friends have been surprised/disturbed by my ability to sing along…He he he

  • MissCobain July 29th, 2013 8:41 PM

The cover ‘Hurt’ by Johnny Cash (originally NIN) is sooo amazing. The original isn’t the same any more

  • Lele July 30th, 2013 7:02 AM

You guys probably don’t know this band because they’re Australian, but the amazing Boy & Bear did a cover of Crowded House’s ‘Fall At Your Feet’.

Seriously you should give it a listen!

Also in my opinion I feel that A Day To Remember did a better version of Since U Been Gone. But hey, thats one girl’s opinion.

  • violetrainbow July 31st, 2013 2:03 AM

the ‘Since U Been Gone’ cover and The Simpsons cumbia was the best!!!
In Peru most of the time i heard such a bad cumbia mostly in the busses but this cover is so cool

  • anaisabel13 July 31st, 2013 11:33 AM

So good! I also like Birdy’s cover of Skinny Love.

  • vvk97 August 5th, 2013 11:43 AM

Thank you for including Sarah’s version of Dock of the Bay!!! <3 <3

  • ghostelic September 8th, 2013 1:32 AM

Superstar by Sonic Youth is one of the greatest things that ever happened to me.
