Friday Playlist: Hanging Out With the Lisbon Sisters

Ten tracks for languidly lounging in a hormone-humid bedroom with Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary, and Therese.

We knew the Lisbon girls only from afar, but we felt like the sisters were almost our twins. Through them we experienced the imprisonment of being a teenage girl and began to understand the meaning of death. They were mysterious and beautiful; we loved them.

Here are 10 tracks for hanging out with Cecilia, Lux, Bonnie, Mary, and Therese.

i might be the only person who feels this way, but i have to say that i am kind of bothered by the frequency with which the Virgin Suicides comes up on Rookie, and the fact that nobody ever bothers to be like, TRIGGER WARNING, THIS MOVIE HAS EXTREME DEPRESSION, PARENTAL ABUSE, AND FIVE GRAPHIC SUICIDES. i personally found the movie really disturbing and i don’t like seeing it glorified so much. i understand that it fits with the theme and a lot of people like it but i think it at least deserves a trigger warning so people know what they are getting into if they decide to go check out the movie after seeing it endorsed here so frequently.

I’m actually really happy that you mentioned that, because I’ve never read or seen it, but I want to since I’ve heard so much about it on this site. So thanks for letting me know what I’m getting into.

    • Josefina June 17th, 2013 11:19 AM

I agree with you as well. I feel like the only person ever who did not enjoy the book at all. If I want to read, I’ll read about something that makes me happy and escape. I feel sometimes people show the exact same thing some people think of Sofia Coppola’s films, that they’re devoid of feelings and full of languid, pensive girls going through inner crises. I know it’s not like that, but when films/books like The Virgin Suicides keep being glorified instead of seen as triggering, perhaps disturbing material, I just feel really upset.

(For the record I’m not saying TVS is a bad film or a bad book. Both are very poignant, very meticulously made. The author writes prolifically and Sofia Coppola is brilliant. BUT it’s a disturbing theme, that’s all)

  • thecoolcustomer June 16th, 2013 1:03 PM

I have literally just finished reading Virgin Suicides and just fits so perfectly into the whole story. So perfect <3

  • amyhodkin June 16th, 2013 2:42 PM

I love that song by Broken Social Scene. First heard it on Scott Pilgrim… what an awesome movie.

  • LeavesThatAreGreen June 16th, 2013 6:56 PM

Rookie, I love you, this is beautiful. <3

  • LeavesThatAreGreen June 16th, 2013 6:57 PM

(I’m actually reading the book right now and then I saw this playlist and wow)

  • annodamydal June 17th, 2013 4:17 PM

Awesome playlist. “I’m in Love with a Girl” by Big Star and Fever Ray’s version of Peter Gabriel’s “Mercy Street” always remind me of TVS as well.
