Friday Playlist: Don’t Look Back

Once-beloved songs ruined by heartache.

Is there a song you used to love, but then it attached itself to some experience that is now too painful for you to think about, and you can’t even listen to the song anymore? Yeah, we have those too—and here they are.

    Dear staff,
I read every single post, every single day. I just can’t believe that you added Valle de Valium by Babasónicos to one of your Friday Playlists. It’s one of my fave songs EVER. I literally grew up (still do) with Babasónicos. Even though there are many songs that remind me of someone/something special, there’s one in particular that kills me every time I listen to it, Gustavo Show. But I just can’t stop listening to it or any of the songs that make me sad. I have even adapted songs to different lovers, is that possible ? yes, indeed.
SO, thank you very much to whoever added this song, it made me REALLY happy and now I love Rookie even more !
    big love,
    Cat from Argentina

    • Laia February 23rd, 2013 2:59 PM in that record is SO aces!!! Gustavo Show is my second favorite from this record I think? but the whole thing is just the best.

  • Clairebearscare February 23rd, 2013 12:34 AM

I’m incredibly in love with Alex Turner… So, this is a pretty nice mix.

  • Whatsername February 23rd, 2013 12:58 AM

Every time I listen to Piledriver Waltz it breaks my heart agh

  • mrsfigg February 23rd, 2013 1:00 AM

the tracklist artwork is gorgeous. actually, this whole mix and the reason behind it is gorgeous. I love you, rookie.

  • Tyler February 23rd, 2013 1:24 AM

  • Amelia February 23rd, 2013 3:34 AM

    so so so beautiful.
for me it’s ‘you and i’ by ingrid michaelson and it makes me so angry that i can’t bring myself to listen to it. used to be the soundtrack of my summer but i suppose that’s the very same reason that it hurts to hear it.

  • Jeanne February 23rd, 2013 3:55 AM

This question doesn’t really fit in here, but Is there going to be a Rookiebook year two?!

  • Ree February 23rd, 2013 4:59 AM

Mine is ‘I Always Knew’ by The Vaccines. I haven’t listened to it since last November because it just kills me.

  • Zoe with two dots February 23rd, 2013 5:46 AM

Two Alex Turner songs from the Submarine soundtrack?
Now I’m convinced Rookie is spying on me. Because last time my ex-boyfriend was over, we cuddled on the couch and watched Submarine, and therefore those songs right now make me very very sad indeed. (The breakup was yesterday.)

  • bird February 23rd, 2013 6:45 AM

Haha. I wish there was only one or two songs I couldn’t listen to… but unfortunately this boy used to make me mixes…

  • flocha February 23rd, 2013 7:26 AM

    agh alex turner…..

  • Teez February 23rd, 2013 8:59 AM

    crazy town! amazing!

  • filmfatale February 23rd, 2013 9:14 AM

My two big ones are “Under the Milky Way” and pretty much anything by the Cure, particularly the ‘Disintegration’ album. ‘Disintegration’ got me through my mother’s divorce from her second husband, which was violent and scary. This happened when I was in seventh grade, and I understood that record in a way no seventh-grader should. A guy I crushed on took me to see the Church, and he proceeded to drag me through the mud and manipulate me because he saw how much I loved him. So no more Church for me. :(

  • epiphany February 23rd, 2013 9:20 AM

sometimes boys are just so stupid.

  • RhiaSnape February 23rd, 2013 10:16 AM

  • Samara February 23rd, 2013 10:37 AM

    YES, same to No7 (Landslide)
Others for me are Songbird, No One’s Gonna Love You, Wonderwall and About Today

  • rosesinthepark February 23rd, 2013 10:44 AM

Mine is all good naysayers speak up- or forever hold your peace by sufjan Stevens. I can’t even think about that song.
This is such a good idea for a playlist!!

  • Izabella Neergaard February 23rd, 2013 2:03 PM

I love Alex Turner! He’s my baby.

haha i cannot believe babasónicos is on this! i’ll show it to my boyfriend, he’ll freak out! hi facu :)

  • catpower44 February 23rd, 2013 6:58 PM

I love Landslide so much! I think it is one of their best songs!

  • periwinkle_dreams February 23rd, 2013 7:10 PM

For me, it’s Always and I’ll Be There For You by Bon Jovi. great songs if you’re ever looking for something to listen to, but there’s just too much pain there for me. someday, after some time has passed, I’ll take those songs back and claim them as my own, because I love music and I refuse to give past suffering the power to decide which songs I can enjoy.

    • Mylene Lacrampe February 23rd, 2013 8:42 PM

  • madame_addie February 23rd, 2013 8:21 PM

everytime you include Alex Turner in a playlist I get a mini heart attack <3
I like the Suck It And See version of Piledriver Waltz better, tho :)

  • cammy-poo February 23rd, 2013 11:12 PM

That’s just heartbreaking that Robyn’s “dancing on my own” can make someone sad. Also horrible to think someone can’t ever listen to “landslide” again. :(

  • Cloudy February 24th, 2013 3:24 PM

wow it’s “babasonicos” on the list :) this is real cute cause I’m from Argentina!

  • magpie librarian February 26th, 2013 7:11 PM

You can’t trick me into listening to Crazy Town.
