Friday Playlist: First Love

The audio equivalent of a romance novel.

You’re in love for the very first time and this is what your brain is playing and this is what your heart is singing … until you get dumped (or do the dumping).

Ten songs for a first love (from the glorious beginning all the way to the nasty end).

  • Veganpop September 9th, 2011 11:06 PM

I just got my first boyfriend ever and I’m extremely nervous about it. However, this list has made me excited. I can get my jams on and stop my worries about what everyone thinks of my relationship status. Thank you, Rookie!

  • anna hollow September 9th, 2011 11:11 PM

great playlist, but fabienne delsol’s name is misspelled in the illustration. it’s ie not ei.

  • katieesther September 9th, 2011 11:15 PM

    Teen love is overrated anyways.

  • Gabriela September 9th, 2011 11:39 PM

i love this playlist, cults are one of my favorite bands they are incredible.

  • JJ September 9th, 2011 11:42 PM

  • lulabloom September 9th, 2011 11:44 PM

I loveee it, this is so perfect! I want to see more of these playlists on rookie!

  • Claire September 9th, 2011 11:44 PM

Veganpop, don’t worry too much about it. I had A Boyfriend for the first time when I was 16 (shameful, I’m told), and although the relationship lasted almost half a year, I was always so nervous and preoccupied with what everyone else thought of it that I couldn’t really enjoy it and ended up dumping him. It’s just jittery at first though, so just relax and have fun (:

  • Dani September 9th, 2011 11:50 PM

Lemme just say. This playlist is swag-tastic.

  • Alexander September 9th, 2011 11:57 PM

Song: Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Girl: Carla Hanson (in Tiffany Swoboda’s Chevy Suburban with JD Nicks? Hicks?)

Story: We were telling stories of our first kisses, and I stupidly (NOTE: Never tell the truth about your first kiss, just make up some cutesy bullshit) told all present how I had been so nervous to kiss Carla that I instead tried kissing her hand, like a Prince (the Prince all girls want when I was 15, right?). It would have been embarrassing, except I missed Carla’s hand and kissed mine instead. The car laughed for several minutes, and then Tiffany told Carla that she would have broken up with me if I had done that to her. Carla laughed, removed her katana, stabbed me through the heart and said, ‘God, you’re right. Alex? We are totally broken up, that story is just too ridiculous.’

    A wonderful song, though.

  • mariani September 10th, 2011 12:02 AM

woooot. you guys make me so happy.

  • Gabi September 10th, 2011 12:33 AM

I love how the mix goes from the start of the relationship to the end BRILLIANT – It’s like what the dad does in ‘Submarine’! Hazel has sideburns! (kidding)

    THIS RULES!!!!

  • marypee22 September 10th, 2011 12:52 AM

Thus playlist just makes me want to fall in love… the perfect playlist for your first love
because your first love always feels like it will be the last and the last always feels like your first

  • Chimdi September 10th, 2011 1:09 AM

abducted has always been amazing to me YESSSSSSSSS

(Oh, and thank you Hazel for reminding me how sad it is that I listen to all sorts of breakup songs and first love songs without having either. Thank you very much.)

  • Chimdi September 10th, 2011 1:12 AM

    P.S. Gabi-SUbmarine YAAAAY

I had such a huge crush on Craig Roberts because of Being Human so I watched Submarine and was like WOW and then I saw him in Jane Eyre and I was like YESSSS!!!!! But yes, one of my favorite pastimes are stalking his and watching his interviews/Bruce andrews vids.

  • Janette September 10th, 2011 2:03 AM

Mm, yes. I also creepily listened to Strange and Beautiful by Aqualung. It was a strange time.

  • preflyer September 10th, 2011 2:03 AM

here’s my interpretation of a first love mix, called teenagers :)

  • izzybee September 10th, 2011 3:07 AM

    I love this! amazing! x

  • a.c harry truman September 10th, 2011 8:59 AM

I am 20 years old. Eating granola with fruit and almond milk. Sitting behind the desk of a wellness center in Wisconsin. And now feeling way too nostalgic to get any real work done. THANKS aLOT!

  • Raconteur September 10th, 2011 9:35 AM

I can’t believe Friday I’m In Love by The Cure isn’t on this playlist! Some great choices though.

  • TaylaTaylaTayla September 10th, 2011 3:11 PM

    Great mix, Ween 4ever.

  • sandrewge September 10th, 2011 4:44 PM

Thanks for the list! Sometimes I like to listen to thematic lists like this. One of my favourite teenage love songs is Rilo Kiley’s “teenage love song”. It’s an amazing song!! Maybe you want to add it to your list too :)

  • kary September 10th, 2011 5:22 PM

today has been boring, which made me question things. this just reaffirmed my feelings:D.

  • Olivia Todd September 10th, 2011 11:48 PM

This reminds me of that power-pop Matthew Sweet album Girlfriend, which celebrates it’s 20th birthday next month. It starts out really positive and happy about romantic love then basically turns into a break-up record. A damn fine good one though!

  • dixxxie September 11th, 2011 12:29 AM

cults are totally my life. and i really love 8tracks. sometimes i just put random playlists on and do homework or whatever.

  • Bleep Bloop September 11th, 2011 2:24 AM

    Can I just add:

  • cherrylion September 11th, 2011 2:46 AM

This has got to be the BEST playlist ever.. Even if your not in “LOVE”!!! Haha!! It gets you pumped up and excited. I really enjoyed this playlist and am still enjoying it. :P

  • absolutewannabe September 11th, 2011 2:36 PM

I was just at a speech tournament with my friends and sang Abducted the.whole.time. My friends said I should make that song into a musical… brilliant song, band, album! And freakin’ brilliant lyrics!

  • Andrew September 11th, 2011 6:03 PM

hell fuckin ya, Hunx and his Punx!!! do you listen to any other queer stuff, Hazel? ~Gravy Train!!!!~, maybe?

  • Bean September 11th, 2011 9:56 PM

Everything could either use some Distillers, Dead Milkmen, or Casualties to it. Might I recommend: (songs in same order as the band they’re by) Beat Your Heart Out, If You Love Somebody (Why Not Set Them on Fire), or Punk Rock Love. I say, they are very important. Also, where is the Green Day?! Their old stuff is primarily love songs. Or even some nice Blink-182. [=

  • Gerlin September 12th, 2011 9:00 AM

Here’s a very recent song that I personally find essential but has nothing to do with first love, yet is very appropriate:
‘Hazel’ by Weekend! A great song for a great writer here at Rookie Mag. You’re welcome!

  • weepygonzales September 12th, 2011 1:57 PM

Tiger Trap’s self titled is one of the best albums ever recorded. Not really a summer album to me, though – definitely suits fall and winter.

  • ballarddude September 12th, 2011 7:13 PM

I’d love to be able to download this! If not as individual mp3′s than maybe as a single mp3? My daughter totally became smitten by this site when I sent her the link! thanks!!!!

  • Kitty September 13th, 2011 1:58 AM

Yay! I was wondering when the Violent Femmes were going to make an appearance here!
This is such a great playlist. <3

  • Pashupati September 13th, 2011 8:47 AM

I searched the videoclips on YT! Hunx and His Punx’s clip is sooo to die for and stuffs! Squeal, people, squeal. (no, really, and when the dude call back!)
Just when I thought videoclips were boring, anyway, and couldn’t change your view of the music. That’s so campy, too!

  • PygmyGeek September 14th, 2011 4:40 PM

CULTS! definitely giving this playlist a spin later today

  • Cebee September 14th, 2011 8:39 PM
